Confidence Beyond the Skin-Do You Have Rough Bumps on Your Arms?

Summertime is around the corner, which means the tank tops and bathing suits are coming out! Many people, especially women, are self-conscious in sleeveless attire because of rough, bumpy skin on their upper arms. This condition is called Keratosis Pilaris and it is very common. It is most often seen on arms, thighs, hips and buttocks. It can be seen in almost any age range and can be light pink or normal skin color.

Keratosis Pilaris is a result of Keratin, a normal protein in the skin, collecting around tiny hair follicles.  The appearance of Keratosis Pilaris can be improved by gently exfoliating with a loofa sponge and applying a good moisturizing cream after bathing. There are some special products that are designed to improve this condition by using Salycilic Acid or Glycolic Acid to exfoliate the rough bumpy skin. Cerave SA can be found at any drugstore, and Dermadoctor KP Duty, found beauty supply stores, are both good choices. If the condition is severe, there are even prescription creams that can help with this condition.

You can see improvements in just a few weeks of regular light exfoliation and good topical choices, so start now and your arms will be soft and smooth by the 4th of July!

I have been asked if I receive any financial incentive to mention products in my newsletter/blog and the answer is no. I only comment on products that I have used myself or that I recommend to patients because they have unique benefits. However, I am a clinical trainer for both Medicis (Dysport/Restylane) and Allergan (Botox/Juvederm).
