Flu season is definitely upon us! Coughs, colds, sniffles, fever…ugh.

Influenza is a virus and is not treated with antibiotics, but frequent hand washing is an important prevention measure to keep you and your loved ones safe and healthy this flu season. Even though the flu virus is not killed with antibiotics, many people prefer to wash their hands with antibacterial soaps. For those people, there may be a new anti-bacterial ingredient coming to the market. Triclosan is an ingredient that is already used in some personal care products like toothpaste, soaps, lotions, etc. Some early studies are showing that this chemical may actually help fight off bacteria and it even might be effective against the resistant bacteria, MRSA. Don’t get too excited yet, Triclosan still has to prove it’s efficacy with the FDA and EPA, but there is a strong possibility that there could be a new over the counter anti-bacterial ingredient soon. Keep your eyes on the counter and shelves of your local personal health stores.

For now, use standard precautions. Wash your hands with water and a soap of your choice for at least 20 seconds. Stay home and rest if you catch something, and of course make sure to hydrate and load up on vitamin C!

I have been asked if I receive any financial incentive to mention products in my newsletter/blog and the answer is no. I only comment on products that I have used myself or that I recommend to patients because they have unique benefits. However, I do occasionally sit on some advisory panels for pharmaceutical companies and I am co-founder of Airelle Skin.
