I love my job, it is so exciting and every day is different than the last! I am often asked about various treatments and skin care and thought I would share the top 5 skin care questions that I get in my practice with all of you!
Q. I can’t be bothered to use a lot of skin care products, if you had to choose one skin care product that was the best “bang for the buck” what would it be?
A. I would recommend a product that is moisturizing and conditioning. Dry skin can look dull and tired so it is important o keep your skin hydrated. Look for products that contain aloe Vera, manuka honey, or vitamin E. For a simple over the counter one step option, I would recommend Cerave. For a product with tint for coverage, I would recommend Revision. For a medical grade natural antioxidant based product with additional anti-aging properties I would recommend Airelle Intense Repair Complex.
Q. Is there a skin care that will really work on fine lines, wrinkles and texture or do I have to do injectable or laser to see improvement in my skin texture?
A. Yes, there are ingredients that will help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It is important to have realistic expectations because there is not going to be a topical product that is equal to injectable treatments but there are certainly many ingredients that can deliver noticeable results. Look for ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid which will absorb 1000 times its weight in water within the skin and “plump” up the appearance of fine lines, or Peptides which have been shown to help strengthen cells in the collagen layer of the skin to help with “tightening” effect.
Q. Does it matter what number of SPF I use?
A. SPF is important to protect your skin from both skin cancer and pre-mature aging. It is important to use an SPF of 30 or higher but what is more important is to use an appropriate amount of sunscreen. The proper amount is a golf ball size for your entire body. And remember to re-apply often if you are sweating, swimming, or in prolonged sun exposure. The only effective natural ingredients that are approved by the FDA for SPF are zinc and titanium dioxide. Look for micronized zinc if you want a something lightweight and that won’t leave you looking white faced like regular zinc can do.
Q.What is the best skin lightener that I can use for my sun spots?
A. Hydroquinone is the most effective skin lightening ingredient and it is also the most controversial. In some countries it is illegal and banned from the market. Natural alternatives to look for in skin care that can help lighten those pesky brown spots are Kojoc acid, Vitamin C, or licorice root. Don’t forget your sunscreen and hat. Skin lighteners won’t work without the addition of sunscreen to prevent more damage.
Q. My co-worker said I look tired/angry and I don’t want to look tired anymore. Is there anything I can do to look less tired or angry?
A. Our faces and facial expressions can give away our mood or may reflect a mood that is not how we feel. Muscles under the skin can tense and pull on the skin surface causing furrowed brows, squinty eyes, or pursed lips. All of these movements will create fine lines in these areas and make us look angry or tired even when we are not feeling that way. Try to re-train your muscles and relax your face as much as possible. You can do this with Botox, regular facials, and even meditation. Try to concentrate on keeping your face calm throughout the day. To enhance your effort use a skin care product that is designed to spot treat areas where your muscles have pulled and started to show evidence of fine lines. Target treat those areas around the eyes and mouth region. My favorite go to product is the Airelle Eye and Lip treatment because it is a lightweight fast drying serum that is easily applied with a cool roller ball. This type of applicator makes it perfect for daily use and on the go touch up treatments throughout the day. In just a few weeks you will notice that you look less tired and will understand why so many of my celebrity patients use this product on and off set!
