Cosmetic Artistry

At one point in high school, before I took Human Biology, I thought I was going to go to college to study graphic design and advertising. I was editor of my high school yearbook and spent some time learning professional photography during my senior year. Commonly, I would lose track of time while evaluating every detail in the faces and images on the page. It was a fascinating art to always make sure everything looked just perfect!

My love of medicine and my fascination with art and layout have given me a unique ability to asses a person’s face based on shadows and lighting. As the face ages, these shadowy areas are where we want minimal attention.  If you can eliminate the shadow, you can eliminate the wrinkle! There is no need to be “over plumped” or “frozen faced;” just soften the shadows and you will look younger and more refreshed!

Sometimes patients say to me that they would never consider an injectable or laser treatment. I usually say, “I totally understand. It is not for everyone. We can accomplish some textural improvement with the right topical products”. What I sometimes find interesting is that so many of those patients eventually return and say “remember how I said I would never want a cosmetic treatment? Well, if you can keep me looking 100% natural and like myself, then I might want to try it now.” Let’s face it, these treatments can be scary and it is important to have an open relationship between patient and provider. I always want every patient to feel very comfortable whether they are interested in cosmetic procedures or not.

I was honored that my ability to make my patients look natural and feel more confident resulted in my recruitment by the largest cosmetic injectable manufacturers to become a teacher for other injectors. In 2011, I became a Duet trainer for Allergan (Botox and Juvederm) and a Peer to Peer Trainer for Medicis (Dysport and Restylane). It was so much fun to teach others how to make their patients look good naturally and feel great about themselves!

Between the advanced injectable techniques today and the improvements in laser technology, major cosmetic surgery can be stalled and sometimes avoided altogether. You can improve fine lines, wrinkles, pore size and overall texture with the right combination of treatments and by using quality anti-aging skin care products. Don’t forget your sunscreen!

When I see a cosmetic patient for the first time, I always ask the same question, “what area bothers you most?” I listen to their concerns, evaluate the shadows of their face and then I see my canvas…

Here is a brief description of some of the most popular procedures!

BOTOX Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) is a prescription medicine developed by the pharmaceutical company Allergan.  An alternative to Botox is DYSPORT (abobotulinumtoxinA), a prescription medicine developed by the pharmaceutical company Medicis.  These products are injected into muscles, primarily in the forehead area using a tiny needle to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines.   In simple terms, they work by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles, which results in a more “relaxed” look.

Restylane and Perlane are prescription medications developed by the pharmaceutical company Medicis.  Juvederm is a prescription medication developed by Allergan.  These products are injected into the skin to add volume and fullness to correct facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines that extend from your nose to the corners of your mouth (commonly known as “Laugh lines”).  They can also be used to smooth away areas such as the lines that can extend downward from the corners of the mouth to the jawline (“Marionette Lines”).

Also known as “Photorejuvenation“, this is a cosmetic treatment that uses gentle pulses of intense, optimized light to lighten undesirable pigment in the skin, such as brown sun spots and broken blood vessels on the face, neck, chest and hands. This typically requires 4-5 treatment sessions.

While some skin resurfacing devices use an ablative method which removes the epidermis and some of the dermis, the non-ablative method sends light pulses into the the epidermis and dermis in an array of narrow, focused “microbeams” which initiate a natural healing process that forms new, healthy tissue resulting in improved skin appearance.  This type of treatment is used to improve acne scarring, stretch marks, surgical scars, lines that develop on the chest, and also Melasma (“Mask of Pregnancy”) and overall skin tightening. This treatment requires 4-5 treatment sessions.

For the treatment of wrinkles and overall skin tightening.  In this type of treatment, laser light penetrates the skin with tiny thermal channels. This creates an ablative and thermal effect in only these channels — a micro-injury — without disturbing the surrounding tissue. The tissue surrounding the micro-injury sites (about 15-20 percent of the treatment area) start the process of healing. As collagen remodels, skin tightens and scars improve. The intact, undamaged skin around the treatment site promotes quicker healing for a much faster recovery than surgery or other more complicated skin tightening procedures. This typically requires only one treatment session but does have a 5-7  day recovery with some mild swelling and redness.

For the permanent removal of unwanted hair.  This type of treatment uses a device that emits pulses of light into the hair follicles.  The light is absorbed by the pigment in the follicles and converted to heat.  The heat then loosens the hair and disables the cells responsible for growing new hair. It is effective only in dark hair and requires about  5 treatments.

Injections to minimize small spider veins in the legs.  This treatment is a series of tiny injections using a sclerosing agent such as Asclera.   The veins often look irritated for a few weeks after the injections before they fade away.
