How does the antioxidant power of blueberry help my skin look better?

Since July is National Blueberry Month, how could I not highlight the amazing benefits of this small-but-mighty superfood?

Blueberries are most notably recognized because of their deep blue pigment and this color is not just for visual aesthetics. This deep royal blue is indicative of the potent antioxidant profile that helps fight collagen destruction in our skin and preserve our “youthful glow”. The presence of Collagen, a protein, is what makes the skin appear young, supple, and plump. Who doesn’t want more of that?

Recently, USDA scientists have conducted studies to determine the antioxidant concentration and antioxidant capacity per serving size in over 100 whole foods. They found that blueberries ranked among the top 20 most concentrated sources of antioxidants, even higher than cranberries and blackberries!

So what makes blueberries so special? The answer is simple; blueberries contain vital “phytochemicals”, antioxidants, in the forms of anthocyanins and resveratrol.

Anthocyanins are natural pigments that give certain whole foods their deep crimson or royal blue hue. Resveratrol is a potent phytochemical originally found in red grapes (and red wine!) and more recently, in blueberries. When these powerful antioxidants are applied topically, they can actually help slow the mechanisms that cause fine lines and wrinkles!

With these fun facts, you can impress your friends at your next dinner party with your knowledge that blueberries are not only a superfood for your body, but also a superfood for your skin!

I have been asked if I receive any financial incentive to mention products in my newsletter/blog and the answer is no. I only comment on products that I have used myself or that I recommend to patients because they have unique benefits. However, I do occasionally sit on some advisory panels for pharmaceutical companies and I am co-founder of Airelle Skin.

Confidence Beyond the Skin-Highlight on Acai

Acai-Powerhouse antioxidant for health and beauty!

It is true that I have taken a bit of a hiatus from blog writing, but I am officially back! For those who don’t know, my hiatus was a far cry restful, it has been an exciting journey of ups and downs, highs and lows; an adventure that only another start up entrepreneur would truly understand. But, like most entrepreneurs, I would not trade this experience and amazing journey for anything in the world!

My time over the past 2 years has been spent heavily researching the benefits of antioxidants from the inside out, and outside in, and in particular how antioxidants benefit the skin! Mother Nature has been kind enough to produce so many power packed anti-oxidants to help us stay healthy, youthful, and vibrant.  While my heart will always be with the blueberry as an antioxidant powerhouse, there are a few other antioxidants that are noteworthy and worth knowing about.

Acai is an antioxidant that is well known as a powerful antioxidant food source, but did you know it has skin care benefits as well?

Acai has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer benefits. It also has the ability to slow, or even reverse signs of aging that are related to oxidative processes!

It also has a variety of omega fatty acids. Fatty acids keep skin cells moist and strong, helping to fight off wrinkles and dry, dull skin.  This means that Acai in skin care can help skin appear more youthful and supple!  Acai is a good source of a variety of vitamins too, like Vitamin B, C, and E!  smiling face

One of the coolest things about Acai when thinking about it in skin care is that when the oil is processed and stored long-term, the antioxidant levels remain high as opposed to other antioxidants that slowly loose antioxidant power over time. I love this fun fact about acai in anti-aging skin care!

Are you taking advantage of all Mother Nature’s little gifts? Don’t forget your anti-oxidants; inside and out!

Confidence Beyond the Skin-Hot New Skin Products in Time for Spring!

Spring has sprung around the country and it’s already time for Easter and Passover celebrations! Every spring, I have the amazing opportunity to attend the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Conference. The conference is attended by over 10,000 dermatologists from around the globe, as well as over 10,000 exhibitors showing off the latest and greatest new treatments and products. The conference offers hundreds of lecture sessions on serious topics such as skin cancer updates, as well as lectures on lighter topics, such as the best plant botanical ingredients in the new anti-aging creams. Here is a photo of my colleague Katherine and I as we navigate the floor of the massive exhibit hall at AAD 2012.

I wanted to share some of the exciting and fun products that we discovered while we were there:

Latisse-Who doesn’t love Latisse? It is an awesome product made by Allergan, the makers of Botox, to make eyelashes grow thicker and longer. It is applied daily along the lash border with a tiny brush. It works very well and results are noticeable within a couple of months of using the product. It is only available by prescription or sold in physician offices. If you are interested in having thicker longer eyelashes, you will love Latisse. It is pricy (about $125 per kit) so watch for special pricing deals. Also, when using Latisse, be sure to have your eye pressure checked once a year since it was originally used only as eye drops to treat  glaucoma  before it was discovered as a lash extender.

Glytone Bleaching cream-This is fantastic for lightening light brown sun spots on hands, face, chest. Be careful to only apply on the brown spot so that you do not get a white ring around the spot. It has sunscreen mixed in so that it can be used both AM and PM for maximum results! It does contains the controversial skin bleaching ingredient Hydroquinone and should only be used for a few weeks at a time. It is only sold on physician offices. Price is $60

KP Duty-If you have dry rough patches on your upper arms, you may have Keratosis Pilaris. It is a condition of very dry skin that collects around hair follicles and is common on upper arms and hips. This company, Dermadoctor, is so much fun to read about and they have developed a great product line to help with Keratosis Pilaris, called KP Duty. It can be found at Sephora stores and online, price is $36.

Spongeables-I am in love with this product! It is a sponge that is already infused with great soaps, lotions and moisturizers, so that when it gets wet you just apply it to your skin and it lathers and conditions. I love the foot scrub Spongeable.  My feet are so much softer after using it for only one week and it smells great! They have Spongeables for other areas of the body too! It can be found at drugstores or online and costs $15.

We have ordered a new product called Retriderm in our office. It is a strong topical Vitamin A and is designed to smooth texture, fine lines and pores on the face with less irritation than some of the other anti-aging products. It is a new addition to the products that we currently carry in our office and I am anxious to hear feedback from people. I have started using it myself and will report back soon!

Stay tuned to the home page of the blog where I will continue to mention new and exciting products. I am excited that I will be adding a fashion corner to the main page also. I have a friend who is an up and coming LA fashion designer and has volunteered to make recommendations about proper use of fashion accessories for my readers!  I can’t wait to learn some tips from her!

Check out the new beauty corner of the main newsletter/blog page where I will highlight a different beauty product every month!
